The good old days in Christchurch have gone

The problem of dairy farming in Canterbury.
The Christchurch I grew up in in the 1950’s has gone foreever. Then, the major problem was the smog from coal fires. The howling, freezing cold Southerlies, which you struggled against when cycling to school, are still there, but disasters such as earthquakes have changed Christchurch and Canterbury foreever.
Now, environmental issues are creeping in as the area is trying to rebuild an economy after the earthquakes. In the 1950’s and 60’s, New Zealand grew rich on exporting “wee fat lambs”. Now markets are reduced for this – Chinese do not like lamb – and Canterbury farmers as a result intensified dairy farming as the demand for milk was higher.
Look at this disturbing video from Newsroom about the environmental impact of intensive dairy farming in Canterbury and the consequences for the Christchurch water supply amongst other things.
